Fort A Changes

155 BellvueJesse James sent me a set of photos he shot while he was in Cape over the Christmas holidays. He happened to be at the end of Bellevue, which was the site of Civil War Fort A.

The old apartment building at 155 Bellevue has been razed and the land cleared for some kind of project. (Click on the photos to make them larger.)

Not much of a loss

Bellvue Street - site of Civil War Fort A 04-07-2011I usually lament the passing of buildings, but this apartment wasn’t much even when I used to visit a reporter friend there in the mid-1960s. Here’s what it looked like in 2011.

I did a Missourian search to see if there had been any stories about what was going on, but nothing popped up. Most of the briefs associated with that address were miscellaneous moperies that showed up in the police briefs.

It looks like Jesse’s photo shows the tree behind the apartment has been saved.

From the air

Aerial of Fort A area at east end of Bellvue Street 04-17-2011Here’s an overview of the neighborhood taken in 2011. The apartment is the white building to the left and below the Fort A label.

A Missourian hangout

Missourian 2Arlene Southern’s apartment was the unofficial hangout for The Missourian’s younger staffers. Jerry Obermark, left, covered cops. Denny O’Neil was one of the most talented writers I ever worked with. He and Jerry went with me to cover the Buck Nelson Flying Saucer Convention in the Missouri Ozarks.

I chased former managing editor Don Gordon down in North Carolina a couple of summers ago. He still talked about how preppy-looking Mary Beth Vawter talked her way into an interview with Barry Goldwater’s wife when Barry was campaigning in Cairo in 1964.

Tall-hair Arlene was the improbable choice for religion editor. She might have been the one who made the mistake of slugging the church briefs “god junk.” Her readers weren’t happy when the composing room forgot to take the slug out before the story ran in the paper.

You notice the table is set for four. I must have been relegated to the kids’ table.

They should hire some high school kid

155 BellvueOf course, grousing about our jobs, pay, hours and assignments took up a lot of our time. I remember when the gripe stick was passed to me one night.

I said, “Yeah, they ought to hire some high school kid to do the scut work to free us up to do really important stories.” When I looked up, everybody was grinning. That’s when I realized that was exactly what The Missourian had done: I was that high school kid.

There was a rumor that some illegal herbs might have been burned in that apartment, but the group protected my innocence and never did anything like that in my presence. They probably should have loosened up a bit so I wasn’t so surprised when I got to Ohio University. The first time I went to a party, I thought, “Wow, these college students must be really poor: they’re having to share a cigarette.”

Fantastic view of river

155 BellvueThe very thing that made it a great vantage point for controlling the river during the Civil War makes it a great location to live today. I’d love to sit on a deck or balcony and watch the river go by.

View from Broadway

155 BellvueHere’s the view of the property looking north from the parking lot of what used to be the former First National bank at the corner of Broadway and Main.

Thanks to Jesse for the news tip and the photos.

Rerun: Santa Mystery Solved

Shopper eyes Santa Claus in Cape Girardeau (actually Jackson)As promised, I’m taking a short break over the holidays and offering up rerun links to older posts.

This story about Christmas shoppers from December 9, 2009, was one of my earliest posts. I made some guesses about where they might have been taken in Cape.

It set the tone for all my posts to follow:

  1. I got most of the facts wrong
  2. My readers went to great lengths to prove I was wrong and to provide the correct information.

By December 12,  Brother Mark, Bill Hopkins, Chuck Blitstein, Jesse James and Brenda Bone Lapp chimed in with opinions, speculation and photographs, but it took The Missourian team of Fred Lynch and Cathy Hancock to determine the photos were taken in Jackson, not Cape.

Hey, close is good enough in horseshoes, hand grenades and nuclear war; I mean I was only seven miles off, give or take?

We know where this is

Rexall Drugs in Jackson, MOBy December 14, the Fred and Cathy team helped figure out where in Jackson these photos were taken, too. Jim Vangilder filled in more blanks.

After that, I wasn’t afraid to post mystery photos. With few exceptions, someone always stepped up to the plate to provide the (maybe) correct information.

This is one of those exceptions: nobody has come up with who these cheerleader-looking types are.

Birds on the Beach

Lake Worth surf before sunrise 01-01-2011 by Lila SteinhoffWife Lila sent me a text this morning: “Can you be spontaneous? Put your pants on and come to the beach to take pictures.”

I’m glad she sent it at mid-morning on New Year’s Eve. The last time she got one of those “spontaneous” urges, I found myself at Lake Worth Beach on New Year’s Day 2010 confirming that, yes, indeed, that bright light in the sky pulls itself out of the ocean at ye god o’clock in the morning. As much as I hate to admit it, she and I took some really nice photos that day. (That’s Lila’s shot above, by the way.)

She wanted promo photos

Lila Steinhoff - Bill Jackson promote 66 Fla reunion LW Beach 12-31-2013She wanted photos of her and Neighbor Jacqie/Bill Jackson wearing reunion T-shirts to promote the Class of ’66 Florida February Extravaganza. What would be better to make people with frozen nose hairs envious than by posting New Year’s Eve beach photos? (You can click on the photos to make them larger.)

Here’s an announcement she put up on the ’66 Facebook page: Classmate Jane McKeown Neumeyer will be in Sarasota, FL during February, so we are planning another luncheon. So far, the details consist of the date… February 6, 2014 … at a restaurant in or near Sarasota. For more information as it becomes available, keep checking Terry Hopkins’ website.

She’s become a Class of ’66er

Lila Steinhoff - Bill Jackson promote 66 Fla reunion LW Beach 12-31-2013Several years back, she and some of her Central High School Class of 1966 grads (and a few stragglers from other classes) started getting together for lunch once a month in cape. She always made it a point to go when she was in town. When she realized how many Cape folks had moved down to the Sunshine State, she and her Florida cohorts decided to start meeting down here.

Here is an account of their first get-together: The original Florida group members; Lila Perry Steinhoff, Jane Rudert McMahan, Bill (Jacqie) Jackson, and Terry Hopkins met for an inaugural lunch at Dunedin on the west coast of Florida in July. It was a fantastic day with friends, food and so many memories and stories. We talked and laughed for more than four hours and decided we had to do it again. Once we put the word out on Facebook and on the 60s’ email list, we started picking up more classmates.

After months of planning and juggling of time schedules, the logistics finally settled and… those living in, visiting, or driving to the Tampa, Florida, area met for lunch at the Thirsty Marlin in Palm Harbor, Florida, on September 9. It was a pretty fantastic day. There was a lot of laughter and memories were shared and stories swapped. Attendees were Jane McMahan, Lila Steinhoff, Bill Askew, Jesse James and wife Margaret, Bill (Jacqie) Jackson, Don Wareing and wife Peggy, Mike Riley and wife Sheila, and Mike Heron.

You can see videos and still photos of the group on Terry’s page.

Florida Pigeon

Birds Lake Worth Beach 12-31-2013The beach is usually the domain of seagulls, but this morning a contingent of what Wife Lila thought were Florida pigeons had moved in. She thought that because, even though the temps were in the mid-70s, they were all puffed up and some were huddling in deep footprints in the sand.

Bigger than average gull

Birds Lake Worth Beach 12-31-2013This was a bigger than average gull and one with a slightly different color than I’m used to seeing.

Speaking of gulls….

60's Reunion Promo 12-31-2013_1783I wasn’t really happy with what I had shot of the T-shirted couple so far. That’s when I turned and spotted a young woman hauling her surfboard to the water. I walked up, said, “Could we borrow you and your board for a minute?”

With only a second’s hesitation, Rachel tucked herself between the old geezers and I made a photo that should entice at least a few members of the Class of 66 to come down.

I sent Rachael a thank-you email, a copy of the photo and some words of wisdom: “I hate to tell you this, but you’re going to look like these folks in a blink of an eye. Enjoy life while you can.”

Thanks for Stopping By

Ken Steinhoff and Anne Rodgers in Hastings in Cape 06-29-2013Friend Anne and I thank those folks who stopped by Hastings Saturday to look at our books and calendars. Wife Lila shot this while we were chatting with someone just out of camera range.

I’m pretty sure it was Jesse James. I’d list more names, but I don’t want to take a chance I’ll forget someone.

I’ll have more calendars and Smelterville books for sale at Annie Laurie’s Antique Shop at First Friday on July 5. Once Lila gets home next week, I’ll post how to order the materials by mail. Here is a sample of the calendar and more information about Anne’s book.
