Stumping Capaha Park

On a recent visit to Capaha Park, I noticed a fresh stump at the top of Cherry Hill. It was obvious from the hollow and rotted area that the tree must have been in bad shape, so I could understand why it was removed, but it’s still sad to see the demise of something that had been part of the park probably even before it was called The Fairgrounds.

A close neighbor reduced to stump

A close neighbor was also reduced to stump and sawdust. I sure hope the new plantings grow like crazy before all the old trees are gone.

Ice got this one

The one above might have been the tree brought down by the ice storm of 2013. That’s the Rose Garden in the background.

What’s the Big Building?

There is a big building south of Independence at 12 South Park Ave. that I’ve always wondered about. There’s a sign on a gate that says “B&S Small Eng.,” but I doubt that’s what it was originally used for.

It has the feel of being a lumber yard. Since it was near where the railroad tracks, it could have been that or some kind of warehouse.

Look at the flowers

When I was trying to see the building from as many angles as possible, I ran into this yard of flowers in an alley directly behind it.

House fronts on South Henderson

The house is on South Henderson. I saw a woman walking down the street and hoped she belonged to the house so I could talk with her but the stopped at another driveway. It looks like it’s been well cared for.

Mother lets me down

Mother, who usually has a keen eye for things, said she had never noticed the big building. I don’t have my normal reference materials with me on the road, so it’s up to you to tell me what I found.

Here are the clues:

It is south of Independence between South Henderson and South Park.
It has a sign that says 13 South Park – B&S Small Eng.”
It is next to D’Lorch Locks and Alarms and some of their trucks are parked inside the fence.

Goodbye Trish’s Place

When I was driving east on Independence from Kingshighway, I expected to see a big empty spot where the old Plaza Galleria, the ice skating rink, used to be, but the space was even more empty than I thought. This photo is looking south toward the back of the Town Plaza Shopping Center.

Among the missing buildings was a strip of businesses, including Trish’s Place. I was never in the joint, but Missourian photographer Laura Simon showed up on May 31, 2014, to shoot a gallery of photos of the closing of the local watering hole.
