Time to Load Up the Bus

I see debate coach Calvin Chapman counting heads or checking for stowaways or whatever activity advisors did when they had a bus full of students heading out for mischief.

Looks alike most of these students are from the Class of 1966; I don’t recognize anyone as being from the Class of ’65.

Headed back to Cape

If I get van back from the repair shop tomorrow, I’ll hit the road to another visit to Cape. It’s a little early for a return, but I have three or four projects to work on before Fall. I’ll fill you in when things firm up a bit.

So, things may be a little light for the next few days. I won’t have Mother with me on this road trip, so I won’t have an excuse to stop for Elvis or Abe Lincoln or any of the things we saw in April.

  1. I LOVED Mr. Chapman. He was our guidance counselor for Class of ’72 and he really had a positive impact on me. So supportive and just plain good guy. I had the pleasure to give a speech at the assembly for him when he retired. He was a true mentor.

  2. This photo was taken sometime before the Ides of March 1966, as at least one miscreant, who was expelled (later reduced to suspension)on that day for inappropriate behavior at a debate, is identifiable in the back of the bus.

    1. Boy, I missed ALL the fun. The year before I joined debate, someone on a trip either held up a “I’m being kidnapped” sign or left a note when they stopped to eat. Before long, the bus was pulled over by a band of troopers who were NOT amused.

Then, you tell me about this incident that happened AFTER I left debate.

I will admit that there were reports of “inappropriate” behavior taking place ON the bus on some of those trips, but I, of course, disavow all knowledge of anything like that. The debate club rules of conduct would have kept me from photographing any of those shenanigans.

  3. How nice to see a photo of Calvin Chapman, my first cousin. We played together as kids in Advance – then his family moved to Cape G and we lost touch as the years went by.

  4. Love the hairstyles. Look forward to more photos of Calvin. I think the late sixties was the last time I saw him.

  5. A friend forwarded this site to me. I was touched and amazed to hear such nice comments about him. I cannot exit to see the debate photos.

  6. A friend forwarded this site to me. I was touched and amazed to hear such nice comments about my Dad. I cannot exit to see the debate photos.

    1. You’re dad was a very special part of my high school years. We also had some fun times at the Elks when he and my uncle (same name) were counselors.

  7. There are students from the class of 1966 and 1967 in the debate picture: Sondra Feverston, Carol Brady, Margaret Randol, Robert Malahy, Dan Beatty, Donna Scott, Georganne Pensel, Chuck McGinty, Claudia Modder, Bill East, Barbara Nunnelly are ones that I can identity.

    1. I don’t think I am on this bus. I did very little debating. I was more of a pinch hitter, specializing in dramatic readings, extemporaneous speaking, and student legislatures. I’m afraid I missed most of the bus trips, too busy working at Wimpy’s.

  8. To Karen – My brother and sisters grew up with Lloyd, Verna Lee, Betty Lou, Raymond, and Calvin and the memories are as alive as ever. Does the Chapman Family have family reunions as they once did? I don’t live near but one of my sisters attended once in a while. Would love to know the status of all.
I’m on Ancestry.com and find a lot of Chapmans hunting also.
What a world to have such a site as this!

  9. The faces I recognize are my class of 1967, Margaret Randall, Dan Beatty, Donna Scott, Chuck McGinty to name a few.

hmmm. I can neither affirm or deny that any of my behavioral “moments” may have sparked such a story.
