White Sands National Monument

White Sands National Monument 06-02-2009I thought you folks might like to see some white stuff that’s not cold. In fact, when Wife Lila and I took a vacation trip out west in June of 2009, it was anything BUT cold at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.

Don’t believe them when they say, “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” At some point, it IS the heat, particularly if the humidity is so low that the sweat is being sucked out of your body like a vacuum was attached to your pores. It was worth a little dripping and dehydration to see the natural beauty of sand on the move. We’ve got us a beautiful and varied country.

Turning the pictures loose

I can’t come up with words better than the pictures, so here’s a gallery of the Monument. Click on the photos to make them larger, then use your arrow keys to move through the gallery.

  1. Nice shots, it always makes me a little sad when I keep White Sands. There is all that great white sand and no wave in sight, sniff…and other worldly place for sure.

    1. Kid, my first newspaper editor told me, “Rocks and roots don’t buy papers. PEOPLE buy papers.” I couldn’t argue with that logic.

I ran these because the people pictures I was scanning took longer than anticipated, so I had to plug the hole with something. You may see some more landscapes from our trip out West now that I remember having them.

  2. Thanks Ken! I (Dennis) have been by there a few times, but was always working and in a hurry, so I never took the time to really see it. Your photos certainly tell me what I missed!

  3. Picnicked there several times in the early 70s as my
husband was stationed at nearby Holoman Air Force Base
and we lived in Alamogordo New Mexico. Sand was cool
to the touch so was awesome walking barefoot. Gorgeous

  4. When I got married, my husband was in the Air Force, stationed at Biggs AFB in El Paso, Texas. We lived there for 15 months and went to White Sands often. Not far from Alamogordo, NM is a place we also visited called Cloud Croft. It was a beautiful place in the mountains.

  5. Pat – We would go to Ruidoso Racktrack near Cloudcroft and also drive thru the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation (home of Geronimo) near White Mountains. Very beautiful
