Athens Winter Storm Video

Athens Ohio Winter Storm 11-26-2013If you’ve been following my travel saga on Facebook, you’ve heard me worrying about the weather. Well, the winter storm caught up with me in Athens, Ohio, Tuesday.

Temperatures hovered just above the freezing mark all day, so I got to splash around in cold, miserable rain that was trying to make up its mind. When I sat down to dinner, it was raining with an occasional flake mixed in. Just as I started to get up, I pulled up the weather ap on my tablet. It was clear from looking at the amateur weather stations that the line of 32-degree temps had just hit us.

I called Wife Lila to tell her that huge flakes of the catch-em-on-your-tongue variety were falling from sky.

“Take pictures,” she said

“Take pictures,” she said. “That’s cool.”

“You don’t understand,” I tried to explain to someone in Florida, “the SNOW is cool to look at, but the air it’s riding in is COLD.”

“Take pictures anyway,” was her response. “Shoot video.”

“Yes, Dear,” was my response (as it should have been the first time she asked. I’ve been away from home so long my reaction time has gotten slow).

The video is pretty neat

OK, I’m glad she made me do it. The picture at the top of the page is a screen grab from the 37-second video. That’s why it’s not as sharp as if I had taken it with my Nikon still camera.

  1. missed it on our way to Cleveland. We were in the “Winter Advisory” zone and not the “Winter Warning” zone all the way. Glad you made it safely. Lila is right. Take pictures. You seem to have the knack.

  2. Soooo professional!! I can just see you watching the icy roads through the lens of your camera! I’m glad your film didn’t turn into one like that SUV roll-over we’ve watched at least a dozen times on the news!

  3. Brr! It’s that wind that kills me. That – and having to put on and take off all those clothes every time you turned around. It’s going to be “chilly” here – though I now scoff at temps in the 50s and 60s. I’ve seen minus 17 degree windchills. 48? Big whoop. Though I still maintain a humid 48 is colder than that dry 36 where some were walking around in shirtsleeves…

  4. My son Oliver, OHIO Class of 2015, drove home from Athens to Northern Virginia yesterday. Of course he told me the weather was fine for the entire route, even through the mountains.

  5. I don’t remember many November snow events in Athens, but sure makes me miss the fun in the snow we had as students.

  6. I remember one big snowstorm that paralyzed Athens. It was probably two feet deep; about 1970 I think. Everything but Rt 50 was closed. I had a 100cc motorbike with knobbies and I could go anywhere. Had a blast. Don’t remember if I did much work, but pretended to, and got off a picture page.

  7. I love the image at the top, sharp or not. And I have enjoyed following through your journey 🙂 Thanks for sharing with us who don’t travel much. The video is ‘da bomb too, btw.
