Cape Central High Photos

Ken Steinhoff, Cape Girardeau Central High School Class of 1965, was a photographer for The Tiger and The Girardot, and was on the staff of The Capaha Arrow and The Sagamore at Southeast Missouri State University. He worked as a photographer / reporter (among other things) at The Jackson Pioneer and The Southeast Missourian.

Come here to see photos and read stories (mostly true) about coming of age in Southeast Missouri in the 1960s.

Please comment on the articles when you see I have left out a bit of history, forgotten a name or when your memory of a circumstance conflicts with mine. (My mother says her stories have improved now that more and more of the folks who could contradict her have died off.) Your information helps to make this a wonderful archive and may end up in book form.

Mississippi River North of Cairo

Aerials Cairo area 08-13-2014

I know the barge is working its way south just north of Cairo, but I’m not exactly sure where it was when I shot it last fall.

Google Earth makes it look like it might be in the vicinity of Dogtooth Island and Sliding Towhead, although it COULD also be near Buffalo Island. Like always, you can click on it to make it larger.

That is just Dr. Steinoffs fancy way of saying he LOVES US! He really really loves us more than those slim, tanned, beautiful, superficial Floridians like MagnumPU Terry Hopkins and Jacqie Jackson!

Looks like headed from Goose Island Bend over to Buffalo Island. at the very top of the picture left hand side looks like Burnham Isl. That is across from Commerce farther up. Also one the right bank below the island is an indentation on the bank. That is where the levee broke in 1993 flood.

Gees…Brune, we heard you the first time…The river is different for the ocean or the gulf. In my case, looking and watching it change my the minute, the river can not be beat, but for swimming and enjoying the water…sorry but give me the ocean and the gulf every time.

Nothing like being up in the air to see how amazing the river is. (Brune probably has to say everything twice since he forgets the next moment that he already posted)
