Deer, Deer, Deer

Deer Old Jackson Road 08-13-2013_5237This just goes to prove I can’t (a) pass up taking pictures of deer and (b) writing bad headlines about them.

Buddy Terry Hopkins and I were riding around coming back from our Super Secret Mission to acquire Blue Hole Garden BBQ sauce, when we spotted these deer on what we used to call Old Jackson Road between Cape and Jackson.

You can click on the photos to make them larger. This deer looks like it has a fresh gash across the right flank.

Good thing I had a camera

Deer Old Jackson Road 08-13-2013_5245The deer were outside Terry’s window, so I pulled as far off the road as I could and rolled his glass down. He’s lucky I was shooting with my camera and telephoto zoom instead of a gun. He’d be deaf and probably missing part of his nose otherwise.

Terry’s Hawaiian shirt must have offended them, because they didn’t stick around long.

With a final flick of a tail

Deer Old Jackson Road 08-13-2013_5246With a final flick of a white tail, they were gone.

We saw deer on at least three residential streets on our meanderings that day. I don’t think we EVER saw one in town when I was a kid. Of course, in those days, we weren’t IN town. We were still outside the city limits.

Two other deer stories

With equally bad headlines.

  1. There was a herd of them…Ken only got a couple of shots because , he said “I was blocking the window”. I was just sitting there trying to get my rifle out and then Ken scares them with the loudest camera click known to man. C L I C K and they were gone!
If this had not happened we could have tried Blue Hole sauce on deer!

  2. Ken, the deer hot spot in Cape is along old Sprigg Street Road, north of Bertling. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a shot of the white deer that lives in that general area. My dad has even seen it in his back yard on Oak Hills Drive.

  3. We are up North in Wisconsin. On the short trip from our friends’ cabin back to our motel, we had four deer cross the road in front of us and another two by the side of the road considering it. Amazingly, our friends have never hit a deer. Maybe the deer are domesticated enough to know when to make a run for it.

  4. Sprigg Street and Bertling is exactly where we saw several deer the last time we were in Cape on our way to the Country Club after dark. The only time I remember seeing deer around Cape was at Trail of Tears Park at night.

  5. Rats. They are gigantic rats. Caused over $3 billion in property damage in the US for 2012. More than a hundred people killed in accidents with them in the same year. The sole bad thing Walt Disney did was to glamorize them with Bambi.

Now that the rant is finished, I suppose they might have preceded homo sapiens in the inhabitation of the planet. Hmmmm.
