Charter or AT&T for Internet?

Pep rally c 1965You’re going to get this shot of Jim Stone (Central T-shirt all excited about something on the paper he’s holding) at what looks like a pep rally because I was too busy today to come up with something better. Jim never had a lot of pep and I don’t recognize many people in the background, so I have no clue what the event was.

The main reason I’m behind is that I spent the afternoon talking to Internet service providers.

Internet dilemma

Mother has had AT&T DSL for some time now. When I started spending more time in Cape, I told her I’d pay the difference between a promotional price for AT&T’s “Elite” level and the basic service she had before. “Elite” allegedly gives you 6 MBS down and about 512K up. After the promotion expired, the price went to $46 a month and is slated to go to $52. They offered me another promo plan, but it will expire in six months, so I don’t want to consider it.

I’m used to Comcast Business in West Palm Beach where I get 100 down and 20 up, so AT&T “Elite” feels like dial-up.

How about Charter?

Charter is offering a 12-month promotional price comparable for what we’re paying for AT&T, but they claim to deliver 60 MBS down. The extra speed sure would be nice. I’m still going to be dealing with an expiring promotion in a year, but a lot can happen in that time.

A lot of you folks like in the Cape area. Talk me out of Charter. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Bundling, by the way, is not an option. I want to keep her AT&T landline for redundancy and reliability. We dropped cable for an antenna in the attic and streaming video. All I’m looking for is a straight Internet package.

  1. Charter is by far the fastest. They have different levels. I am at the highest level but rarely get close to 60mb down. Usually more like half of that.

  2. What cast of characters….Bill Kaiser, Mike Stovall, Danny Ray Birk, John Hodges and on the second row, Mike Young, Gary Fauruhahn, Terry Darter, Jimmy Cheek and John Sasche looking over the shoulder of Hodges. Sorry for any misspelled names but nice shot of many of the guys in the class of “66”. That will give Brune something to do check all this out. Me, I have to go to lunch with a starlet from the Home Shopping Network, life is tough…

  3. I have had AT&T for my cell phone for ages (no land line in like forever). However, I can understand keeping a landline for your mother. I got a cell phone for my mom and she promptly hid it. I have had charter for Internet and am satisfied with it. I dropped the charter cable for Roku and free TV and am extremely happy. I was paying more for basic Charter than I am for Amazon Prime and free tv. Just my thoughts.

  4. Shame you aren’t in the Panhandle of far western Nebraska. We have a local company delivering fiber to the house. Their basic internet service is 100 down and 100 up – and the speed test usually shows 98-99+ real, at prices comparable to Charter. Nebraska! Nice!

  5. I have a Charter bundle package (t.v., phone and wireless internet) and am extremely pleased. Any service calls have been same day or next day and very courteous.

  6. Have had both. Charter hands down. So fast and not the constant dropping off or locking up.and if you want a home phone its very inexpensive as part of the package.

  7. Just switched to AT&T. Internet with AT&T not as fast as Charter – I have next to fastest of AT&T – sales person told me it would be as fast a Charter, but not the case. Was with Charter for three years and they jacked price up over $200 a year vs. U-Verse. U-Verse TV is great. Good to see some of my classmates while I can still remember!
