Storms and Strawberry Pie

It’s been a rocky start to the severe storm season. Grant Dade, KFVS weatherman, reported “43 county tornado warnings and 204 county severe thunderstorm warnings in our viewing area yesterday (May 8). We can all be thankful the low level shear was weaker than advertised or instead of sporadic storm damage today it would have been catastrophic.”

For the record, KFVS claims to cover 50 counties in four states, including all of SE MO, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Northwestern Tennessee.

So, what’s with the pie?

Last year, I dilly-dallied around and missed strawberry season at Beggs’s Berry World at the Benton I-55 exit. I came within about a week of missing it again this year because of weather.

When I was checking out with my plastic gallon bucket of fresh strawberries, the cashier asked if I’d like one of the strawberry pies they had left. My arm didn’t have to be twisted.

I’m Johnny Strawberry Seed

Shortly after I had mastered the art of making cheesecakes, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

I was lamenting on my status to Museum Director Carla Jordan when she gave me a good piece of advice: “You don’t have to eat the whole cheesecake. Cut off an allowable slice, then distribute the rest to deserving folks so you won’t be tempted.”

With that in mind, I made the rounds of Cape friends and relatives, muttering, “Get thee behind me, Satan,” as I dropped off the goodies.

FYI. the unsliced berries in the pie pan was just to fill up the space.

In case you go looking, Beggs has moved to the opposite side of the I-55 exit. I went to the old location,  proving that my GPS Lady in the Sky was wiser than I was.

  1. Hello Ken! Your pie looks delicious! I found your site when googling Alma Schrader Elementary School. I attended the school in the early 70’s till the middle of my sixth grade year in 1980. I am an artist and have an upcoming exhibit next year. The exhibit will include items that spark memories as well as scenes of nostalgia. My research to help create references for the show lead me to your body of amazing photos of Alma Schrader. I think I spent a few hours on Saturday scrolling through your site down memory lane! Would you be okay if I used some of these photos as references for my artwork? By the way, I absolutely love the photo you captured of your family. Thank you for your consideration. DeeDee Bernhardt

    1. I’m glad you like this site. You are welcome to use my images as references for your artwork so long as your use is non-commercial. If you’re making money off the project, I’d like a piece of it. I’d love to see how the pictures are used when you get done. If the pictures are used extensively, I’d appreciate a note that they are © Ken Steinhoff.

  2. Hi Ken!
Thank you for getting back to me regarding the use of your photographs as reference material for my upcoming art show. I am not sure what you would consider commercial vs non- commercial. If I proceed to utilize your photos, my plan would be to use one to three of your photographs from the Alma Schrader school shoot as reference material for individual 8″ x 8″ paintings. These paintings would be for sale at the gallery for the month of July 2025. I never make prints of my work. The gallery takes a 30% cut. I would be more that happy to add your name as credit to the tags.

    1. Go for it. Credit must be somewhere to protect my copyright. I’d love to see a photo of your finished work.

I’ve had some unusual requests for what I consider non-commercial use in illustrations. A retired Secret Service agent liked to do sketches of agents he had worked with as gifts for them. He asked to use some of the pictures from the Billy Graham rally that showed agents. He said that if any of them made him rich, he’d share the wealth. So far, no checks have arrived.

  3. Thank you Ken! I will definitely send you photos of the finished work! How cool about the Secret Service artist!
