Trinity Lutheran Sunday School

These photos of Trinity Lutheran Sunday School were shot May 14, 1967. They show that classes were shoehorned into every classroom, the gym, the stage, hallways, the basement and the bowling alley.

These have the feel of something I might have shot for the church for a fund raiser rather than a Missourian assignment.

  1. Ah yes, I went to a fuenral in the midwest(St. Loius) last month and was surprised that everyone had suit and tie. I had forgotten the proper way to dress for anything after living in Florida for 4 years.
It seems the saying was you needed to look your best for church and EVERYONE did or at least tried to look as good as they could! We live in different times, but these people are dressed for business and they are taking care of business. AMEN!

  2. Looks like Granny Brune was right. Those darn Lutherans having all those kids are trying to take over the world….

No, hold it. She may have been talking about the Catholics and that rhythm thing …

Well, I can’t remember who it was. I just know it wasn’t us Methodists. We weren’t even supposed to dance. And it wasn’t the Baptists cause they don’t drink.

After giving birth 5 times in 7 years – people would often ask my Mom and Dad if the Brunes were Catholic. They would say, “No, we are just ‘sexy Methodists’.”

The last time I heard my parents tell that joke was when Dad was in the Veteran’s home at 88 years. He had a stroke and couldn’t talk so we were not sure what he understood. When Mom 87, made that ‘sexy Methodists’ statement in a group of elderly couples celebrating Valentines day together – Dad got tears in his eyes, laughed out loud, and nodded in agreement.

    Happy Valentines Day.
    blessings,
    Brad

  3. Many of the ladies in these photos are dressed in their “Sunday best”, many wearing hats and corsages. The date shown is May 14, 1967 so my guess would be Mother’s Day.

Brad, I loved your story about your parents being ‘sexy Methodists’ and about your Dad’s response upon hearing it at 88 years old. Memories of things like that are priceless.

  4. I think I can name most of my age group in the last photo from left to right; Wade Fuller, Bruce Fee, Archie Wayne Sprengel, Tim Dunham, Tom Herter, Linda Werner?, Deborah Hoeller, Cindy Petzoldt, and for the life of me I can’t remember the last girl’s name, but I think her last name was Hente.
