Scouts Headed to New Orleans

Pam Burkhimer, Sally Bierbaum and Gail Tibbles pose for a photo. I say pose because they were supposed to be packing for their Senior Girl Scout trip to New Orleans and there’s no way three members of the Class of ’66 could get all their stuff in one suitcase.

The only thing that looks real is Gail Tibbles with a list and checking it thrice. The Otahki Girl Scout Council chartered two buses for the Big Easy trip in June 1966. Wouldn’t you know it, just about the time the city recovered from that, along comes Hurricane Katrina.

  1. Great shot,I remember the talking about this trip and thinking….Wow that would be fun… and then remembering I was not a girl scout. So let’s here from the girls…how was the trip?

  2. Girl Scout Troop 17 took a trip to New Orleans in 1961. We took the Panama City Limited train down and the City of New Orleans back and had a terrific time. I came across my pictures from that trip and sent some to the girls in my pictures. I didn’t know other Girl Scouts had gone after we did since by then we were living in Florida.

  3. Everything about New Orleans was amazing to me. My family traveled all over the U.S., but never to such a “hot spot” as NOLA. I know my mother was happy to get all of us home safely.
