December 1966 Basketball

Dec 1966 basketball tournament at SEMOThe sleeve is marked December 1966 Basketball. Since there are a variety of teams all jumbled together, I’m assuming it is the annual Christmas Tourney or the College High Tournament. I can’t remember if they were one and the same or if they were two different meets.

Anyway, the film was in pretty bad shape. Some of the frames were clean and sharp; others were fogged and had something that looked like an amoeba growing on it. I cropped the frames a little loose because I thought I could almost recognize some of the spectators.

  1. Great action pictures Ken. Too bad not more or CHS as there would be more friends in crowd. CHS team is class of 1967 and this was the Christmas Tournament then called the College High Christmas Tournament because they sponsored it at that time.

Here’s a few I recognize. Young & handsome Larry Johnson and big Phil Blackston are everywhere. David Proctor is #10 in pics 9 & 12 of 26. Mark Kirkpatrick (8/16/49) is #24 in pic 15.

Iraq War veteran & recently retired Lt.Col. Terry Crass US Army who still works at the VA Clinic in Cape as an RN. Terry is trying to hide his face in pic #10. Must be a volunteer taking selling hot dogs as he had graduated spring of 1966 and was at SEMO. Terry was 4 year CT Letterman as an athletic trainer.

Images are quite distorted in pic #23 of 26 in the crowd but I believe…. HOF Mike Schuette is in letter jacket above the referee. Looks like Burt Lehman (white shirt) and Russ Doughty behind Mike and to the left. Gary Cazough (sp?) 3 down to right of Mike in plaid shirt. Gary also in pic #24.

Of course like always… I’m old and burnt out. I could be wrong.

    1. I was scratching my head over Terry Crass. I KNEW I knew him, but just couldn’t come with a name for the face.

Sorry for the quality of some of the pix. I must have cut some corners when I was fixing and washing the film, so it had deteriorated. It’s amazing how a digital scanner will bring out detail that I wouldn’t even attempt to print on conventional photo paper.

  2. Pics 21 – 26 are of a SEMO game. 42 is Kermit Meystedt. 32 Charlie Bertrand. 34 Curtis Williams. 35 Dan Milligan.

  3. Terry Crass with his hand up…10# FIlMORE Blaskiston is a bunch of shots…wearing 22# for the Tigers
Kermit Meysted is number 42# in last set of College pictures, Charlie Bertrand is the guard most of the shots for SEMO and of course Curtis Williams is number 34#.
Nice shot of John Wilkens in 26# for the tigers in picture 11#.
I could go on a name the Oran Eagles cheerleaders, but I don’t want to do a “Brune” so I will stop and say, glad you saved these pictures Ken.
We did not wear jeans is those days except for work. I do believe our own Andy Pemberton was the FIRST guy to wear jeans in High school. I wonder if Andy will share his thoughts on that with the class. So in those days you would not see many jeans if any in the crowd. We all wore slacks and leather shoes. I did have pair of WHITE Levis, but that way cool and only worn at school and were well accepted by the school and all the cool people. Hey, Pat Boone wore them so the teachers thought white Levis were okay too.

    1. “FIRST guy to wear jeans in High school…” It is quite an honor to learn that I was the one that started that fashion trend. An event as ground breaking as that should be told to family and friends over and over again. But, I don’t really remember it :-).

Speaking of fashion, did you see that photographer in image #16? He has a very handsome profile, to be sure, but do you see those socks? Doesn’t he know that white socks were the fashion statement of the times?

Speaking of the times, in image 5 is the right most cheerleader texting?
