Opportunity and Overalls

Jesse King and Bill Robinson, "Friends on Robinson Road, 02-26-1969I was trying to figure out what I was going to put up today when a friend posted an old Thomas Edison quote on her Facebook page.

Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

I don’t know if Bill Robinson made the most of all his opportunities, but he DID have overalls and I’m pretty sure he has stared work in the eye. I photographed Bill on Robinson Road in Athens County in 1969. I’ve written about Bill and his buddy Jesse King before.

  1. This a great shot…reminds me of my grandfather Cherry. Overalls were the clothes of the working man and if you wore them you knew what work was and knew it by its first name!

  2. Reminds me of when I worked at J.C. Penny’s part time while in High School, in the “work clothes” section. When farmers came in to buy overalls, many bought a couple of pair of one size and one of a samller size for Sunday. I guessed the larger size was to allow for warm clothes to be worn underneath.

  3. Ken, the prior story that you refer to in your post today – Bill and his buddy Jesse King – was one of my favorite posts. We were in Baltimore while our newest granddaughter was born and I made everyone read it on or around Valentine’s Day. We all loved it. You are a Master Storyteller – what a gift.

  4. Looks like Bill has had the opportunity to fix that garage before it collapses on his car, but I reckon his overalls are just too old to handle the job.
