Notre Dame Varsity Drive

HELP! We sophomores never win; the upperclassman always beat us. Please help us!” whined the poster at the Notre Dame High School Varsity Drive some time in the late 1960s.

I want you to note that all of the words on the girl’s poster are spelled correctly. She even uses a semicolon properly.  She may have violated Charles Schultz’s copyright by appropriating Charlie Brown and Lucy, but that semicolon bought her some slack with me.

The negative sleeve didn’t have a date. There are some shots of what looks like a hay ride at the end of the roll which may or may not be part of the Varsity Drive.

  1. Thanks Ken, I recognized allot of the kids in these pictures. Most of them were younger than myself. That was the way we raised money for our sports program. I remember one time we had a rummage sale down by the cement plant and my sister sold my moms new coat. My mom was really mad. We had to go find it back and re buy it. I just thought you would enjoy that story. Patti

    1. Thanks. None of the kids looked familiar to me, but I didn’t have a whole lot of contact with them or the ones who went to College High.

Great story on the coat. How much did you have to pay to get it back and how did you track it down?

  2. Ken: I recognized two girls in the Notre Dame pictures, and they would have been sophomores in the Sept. 1966 to June 1967 school year. Where were JB, Powers, and Sky King when you need them?

  3. Ken,
My wife, Judy Ritch, was a sophomore in ’67 and believes that the first photo is of Mary katherine McCrate. Some of the others looked familiar to her but no names come to mind at the present. It makes her want to see if she can find her year book. If she manages to pull that off we’ll try to identify others, if no one else replies.

  4. Off the subject here, but my first date was at a dance at Notre Dame in the mid-60’s. It was a blind date; I don’t remember his name. It was raining. His car broke down. We had to get out and push it up that small hill by the school. That’s when I found out that if you get mohair wet, it actually shrinks as it dries. I had on a dress made entirely of mohair. I came in with a wet dress on which proceeded to get shorter and shorter as it dried. I finally had to leave to keep from showing it all! LOL And mini-skirts hadn’t become popular yet. Oh, the shame of it all. Makes me laugh now.
