Class of ’61 50th Reunion

This weekend was the Central High School Class of 1961’s 50th Reunion. I crashed Saturday night’s shindig. When I left the house, I told Mother, “If you hear a disturbance call at the Country Club come across the scanner, it’s probably me getting tossed out for showing up uninvited and in jeans. (Click on any photo to make it larger.)

I’m doing WHAT?!?

Much to my surprise (and dismay), I found myself drafted into taking the class group shots, even though I protested that I don’t really do that kind of thing and didn’t bring along the right equipment. I guess I shouldn’t underestimate what you can do with a Nikon D40 and Nikon SB-600 strobe.

The photos aren’t up to Paul Lueders standards, but they’re better than I expected. I had to break the class into two groups because my lens wasn’t wide enough to get everyone in the same shot.

I’m not set up to make prints for sale, but if there’s enough interest, I’ll find someplace to put them where you can order reprints at a reasonable price.

I won’t even try to identify the folks in the photos. I’ll leave you on your own for that. Thanks to the Class of ’61 for making me feel welcome at your 50th.

  1. Great job as always, Ken. Don’t think you have to worry about getting tossed out. You are always welcome to drop in. Thanks for the photos. Many memories preserved.

  2. I left the reunion after about half of the folks had pulled out of the parking lot. Since I was so close, I thought I’d cruise by Cape Rock to see if anyone from the Class of 1961 was checking out the submarine races that had been referenced in the program.

The place was empty. No cars, zip. Either it takes a lot less time to conduct business than it did in 1961, or folks are still wandering around in the dark trying to find the place.

When I ran a scenic photo taken from Cape Rock last week, one of MY female classmates commented on Facebook, “You mean there’s a RIVER down there?”

  3. Thank you Ken for the great pix of the CHS Class of ’61 reunion. I should have graduated with these kids, but moved to Mich in spring of ’58. I had some great friends in CHS/Cape and oftened wondered how they were doing. I recognized Sherry Huff (she looks great) but couldn’t read the names on the other people (my eyes are REALLY bad!) You do such a wonderful job keeping us all entertained with your great sense of humor and sharing your pictures of the past and present of that wonderful, great city of Cape Girardeau, MO. Keep posting those great pic’s! By the way, I have a pic from Lorimier Grade School dated 1954 and some of the kids might be in it – where can I send it so it can get posted?

  4. Ken, thanks so much for making all us “only 4 years older than you” people look really, really good. You were very patient with us and I’m sorry there wasn’t any table dancing to entertain you. Maybe next time.

  5. Ken…what can I say…you are the ever professional photographer…retirement has only broadened your horizons…glad the class of ’61 was available to help you have subject matter to occupy your time in Cape…like you need any help. I knew you would have pictures posted before we all woke up from our naps! Thank you big time!

    1. Pat, I’m waiting to see how many, if any, folks want physical prints of any of the pictures so I can see if it’s worth setting something up with an online company who will handle the printing and shipping of them.

Right now, you’re the first person to ask. If I don’t hear from anyone by the middle of next week, after the email newletters go out, we’ll work something out.

  6. Ken,
I’ll be the 2nd one to want them too! I wondered who in the world was the man taking pictures at our reunion on Sat. night. You did an excellent job as usual. So good to meet you and put a face to your name.
Once these pictures are posted in the 1960’s newsletter, you’ll be overwhelmed with classmates wanting copies!
Thanks again for being there for us!

    1. The folks who put me in the witness protection program aren’t happy that I blew my cover. Let me see what we can do about figuring out how to handle reprints. I’ll let the newsletter folks know.

  7. Penny, if you don’t already get the 1960s Newsletter, send us your email address and you’ll see the names printed on Sunday to go with the picture. Send it to tiger1960@etcmail.com and we’ll add you to our email list. We try to print the links to all of Ken’s blogs every week.

      1. Lynn,

I’m not sure I understand what you’re looking for. The name of this site is http://www.capecentralhigh.com.

Margi doesn’t have a website. She has a weekly (more or less) email list of interest to the 1960s-era classmates. Her email is in the message above.

If you’re looking for the address to order photos of the reunion, I’m working on that. I’m waiting for the company that handles them to answer some questions on Monday.

      2. please send me info on the 60’s newsletter. I am a graduate of the class of 1964. Brenda Rollman Vilagy @Vilagy @semo.net

  8. Good work Ken,but the only ones there that I knew was my brother, Jerry & his wife Margi. We are in West Va. but will probably be heading back to Florida in a few days.

  9. My mom – Marsha (Webb) Clark graduated from Cape Central in 1961 and has been trying to get a list of her classmates who have passed away. She was told her class has lost 40+ members. Does anyone have this information?

  10. Tracie, tell Marsha to email Gail Hennecke, class of 1966. She has lists of the deceased for each class. Her email is: gshennecke@charter.net. If she would like to receive the 1960s Tiger Newsletter, have her contact me at tiger1960@etcmail.com. There is no charge and we’d love to hear from her.
